What are the characteristics of terrazzo hardened flooring?

When it comes to terrazzo flooring, we all recall the youthful days of our school years. In my memory, terrazzo floors have always been the dominant choice in educational institutions. From elementary school through middle and high school, these red-and-white terrazzo floors were a constant feature on the grounds.

In fact, terrazzo is a composite material made from a mixture of marble, granite, quartz, glass chips, cement, or epoxy binders. The chips are combined with either epoxy resin or cement, and the resulting mixture is machine-polished to achieve both strength and flexibility. After polishing, the surface is thoroughly cleaned and sealed with wax. As a result, terrazzo is durable, cost-effective, and requires sustainable maintenance over time.

After the terrazzo floor surface reaches a certain strength, water is added and the surface is polished using a grinding machine. Terrazzo floors exhibit higher surface hardness compared to conventional concrete floors. Prior to the introduction of concrete sealers and hardeners, polished terrazzo flooring was widely used in various settings such as factories, hotels, hospitals, schools, and residential spaces. This widespread adoption was due to its ability to freely customize colors, coupled with convenient and rapid installation processes, effectively meeting customers' aesthetic requirements for flooring. However, over time, terrazzo floors often encounter issues during practical use, including dust and sand accumulation, staining and discoloration, difficulty in cleaning due to surface abrasion, cracking on the surface, and even partial detachment. For these problems affecting older terrazzo floors, treatment with concrete sealers and hardeners can effectively restore and enhance their durability and appearance.

After applying a concrete sealer and hardener to terrazzo flooring, the material penetrates deep into the surface of the terrazzo, chemically reacting with the ground to create a tightly hardened finish. So, what are the characteristics of terrazzo flooring? They are as follows:

1. Hardness and wear resistance are enhanced; after sealed hardening treatment, the Moss hardness of the ground surface can be increased to level 9.

2. No longer covered by dust, providing a healthier work and living environment.

3. Enhance the water resistance of the floor to prevent oil stains from easily penetrating.

4. Glossiness increases—marble glossiness improves significantly.

5. Easy to clean, resulting in smoother floors that are less likely to trap dirt and avoid dust accumulation, making management more efficient.

6. Greatly extends the lifespan of terrazzo flooring—almost as durable as the building itself, making it a one-time installation for long-term use.

Additionally, terrazzo hardened flooring differs from traditional terrazzo floor materials in that it exhibits inferior compressive strength. Instead, it is produced by incorporating a hardening agent into concrete, which binds the concrete into a robust, monolithic structure. This material effectively blocks the passage of water molecules, thereby preventing premature moisture loss during the initial curing phase after concrete pouring. At the same time, it allows groundwater vapor to permeate freely, offering exceptional breathability—making it an ideal choice for ground-level or damp environments. As a result, terrazzo hardened flooring delivers outstanding performance in terms of dust resistance, compression strength, and impact resistance.

With the advancement of science and technology, floor treatment technologies have become increasingly sophisticated. Concrete sealers and hardeners have now become the standard for terrazzo flooring, offering us new visual and tactile experiences. Indeed, the sealing and hardening treatment applied to terrazzo floors delivers outstanding results.
